1. Clothing is very informal, though many people do dress up in the evening. Take a cardi or shawl, and flat or low-heeled shoes are necessary. 2. The electrical supply is 220V AC. Sockets are only 2 pin, so an international plug adapter is handy. Electrical wiring is sometimes fairly basic. 3. Mosquitoes can be a nuisance in the evening -don't leave windows and doors open with lights on inside. (use antimosquito devices) Spray ankles and vulnerable bare bits if sitting out in the evening ("Johnson's Off' apparently works). "TCP" ointment is very effective for bites. Insects-ants etc are native to Corfu, they do not indicate a lack of hygiene. 4. The sun, needless to say, can be very intense. Please introduce yourself gradually -hats and sun creams, especially for children, are essential. Even on an apparently cool, windy day the sun can burn. PLEASE -too much sun too quickly can make you ill, so BE CAREFUL. As is recommended, avoid the sun between 12 and 2 p.m. 5. Guard against fire in the villas or countryside, the nearest fire engine is in Corfu Town. Enquire from host/ess in resort as to precautions and fire fighting aids. 6. Useful things to take -torch travel iron, first aid kit, hair dryer. Also tea and coffee which tends to be expensive, a cool bag and a pocket Greek dictionary! 7. Collect your host/ess's telephone number. It could be useful if you are out and about. 8. Self catering in Corfu is the simple life -if a tap drips no-one will rush round to mend it. This is charming but sometimes frustrating and confusing. It is not 'a little England' it is Corfu. Therefore don't go if you are not prepared to be 'laid back'. MAID SERVICE: Maid Service is as detailed in the accommodation descriptions. Where provided, this means that the accommodation should be swept, the bathrooms cleaned and the dustbins emptied. It does not normally include washing up, bed making or clothes washing. Unfortunately because owners are often involved in other employment e.g. running a taverna, maid services can sometimes become irregular. NOISE: Noise in resorts is a problem, which we find difficult to describe. Everyone's opinion of noise and its level varies. In Greece the local people get up early and go out from 6.00 am onwards. On the other hand, people on holiday go to bed late; entertainment tends to be in the semi-open air, and can often go on until 2 or 3 am. Occasionally a dog seems to sleep during the day and bark all night. Also some building can be in process. It should also be noted that even this small quiet village may be expected to be busier during the peak season months of July and August than in the less popular months of April, Mayor October. The sound of scooter/ motor bikes is to be expected. Personal noise -don't forget you have neighbours! Please no rowdy parties and keep children under control in and around the villas and gardens. WATER In most areas of Greece there are plentiful supplies of water, but, especially during the high season months June to September, you should be prepared for the occasional drop in pressure and breakdown in supplies. Showers are often hand held and no shower curtains -beware of slippery bathroom floors. The above
points are raised as possible but unlikely. Most of our customers have
wonderful holidays and return on a regular basis.
